Particle physics broke off from nuclear physics after the manhattan project. Government was like, ya, we'll just give you guys money, cause you seem to be really useful to us when we give you money. So question we have to ask ourselves is, like, is being useful for building weapons of mass destruction? Why should they care about what we are doing in particle physics? It is on us to make that case for the spiritual significance and the cultural significance. And there we are, on the same page with the arts. We matter the way that novels matter.

Paris Marx is joined by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein to discuss the science behind the new space telescope, the problems with the billionaire space race, and why we need to challenge the capitalist and colonial forces driving the the effort to commercialize space.

Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is the author of The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred. She’s also an assistant professor of Physics and core faculty member in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of New Hampshire, and a columnist at New Scientist and Physics World.
