What's Going on in Your Head When You're Trying to Get Your Act Together
When we tell people in experiments to use their own name, to coach themselves through a problem, we ask them what they thought about when they did this. It very much looks like they're giving advice to a friend. We tend not to talk about traumas and experiences that were embarrassed about or experiencing shame. But all the other negative stuff that we find ourselves rummaging through, we want to get it out.
