Is OCD a Defense or a Coping Strategy?
I think in a majority of cases, if not true, I think that most of the time you can treat the symptom. And I don't think that the person's underlying issues is in OCD specifically. If you do exposures around harming a child, that person might then be able to use knives around the baby,. But you're probably not addressing the underlying issue of integrating angry, hateful feelings within loving relationships. So we need to operate on both fronts. We need to do the behavioral treatment, treat the symptoms, and then also address the emotional symptoms.
