Dosing the Flames - The Early Warning Score
The early warning score, much like SIRS or QSOFA, utilizes several variables including level of consciousness, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, and blood pressure. A 2017 study by Chirpakeal found that early warning scores had the greatest accuracy with respect to risk stratification for patients with suspected infection. Despite advances in medical therapy, the mortality for sepsis still remains astoundingly high,. In patients who require ICU admission, the mortality is as high as 20 to 30%. The cost to the US healthcare system was $24 billion in 2013.
