The Picts, Skoti and Saxons raided Britain in the 4th century. The threat of incursion alone was enough to negatively affect daily life for many Britons. Fear of disorder and violence is just as powerful as the thing itself. For a few decades beginning around 340, the state clung to existence but by the first decade of the 5th century it was completely gone.
