Make sure that you bake into the project some ways of getting other people involved. You've got to make sure that you're pouring that energy into a place where the attention's cheap. Third thing you hagt to do for the side project, make sure it's connected by connecting with your peers. They don't even have to be people that are miles ahead of you - they can even be your proteges.
