The Effects of Ergot Alkaloids on Sedges

Ergot is the fungus that would infect rye grain in Europe and in the Middle Ages. In natural populations, the fungus infection occurs at low rates. The indigenous people of the Amazon have taken advantage of this ergot infestation to control it. They use them for hunting, for singing, for psychological illnesses,. taking advantage of the psychoactive properties of the ergot alkaloids. And so what I think is happening is that each one of these 12 or 15 or 20 several dozen cultivarid varieties has a unique cocktail of ergot alkaids.
