The Ideal Conditions for Preserving Flora

The material that we've worked on with my colleague, Elsmeri Fries and also Cardpetison have been really tiny little angiospern flowers. Sometimes they're preserved just by being deposited in an environment where decomposition is minimized but sometimes they're preserved rather dramatically by having been burnt in a forest fire. So many of the fossils that we collect are actually charcoalified so they're exquisitely preserved as charcoal and they studied in great detail. They're basically the remains of 100 million year old forest fire that went through and burnt the forest and in the process charred some of these beautiful little flowers that we can still study today.
