Both Baldwin and Wright are writing about their experiences as kids and young men in the 1930s. A few years before Baldwin's dreamy ad was published in 1963 Norman Podhorets gave the Jewish perspective of that same period with his famous essay called my Negro problem and ours. He tried to excavate the roots of his own prejudice from his childhood experiences living in one of those neighborhoods where he experienced the hatred and hostility they were telling us about.
