The part of New Guinea I work in has the highest apo-E in the world. Half of the alleles in the population are APOE4. And it was interesting because the thought was that it played a role in secondary inflammatory response. So you can see maybe that would have a beneficial effect for something like an infectious disease, but potentially that balance gets thrown off when you look at things like secondary injury or chronic injury.
