The Ecology of Flowers

The scent is coming from an actual fermentation process, or are they actually producing compounds akin to something that a yeast would give off? Based on some work from my PhD, we tried to sterilize some of the flowers, take scent from those. We tried to culture what might be on the flowers. Robert Gussa is actually expanding on that work now at Cornell with a grad student that he has in his lab. But as far as I can tell, and from updates that I've gotten from Robin, a student Kyle, is that it may be augmented by things growing in the tissue or on the tissue, but it is definitely coming from the floral tissue to a large degree.
