What Is Plate Tectonics?

If you look at Mars or Venus, they don't have plates. So the formation of plates is not an inevitable part of planetary formation. Exactly why it started and even when it started is still under debate. I think we have fairly good evidence now that there was some lateral movement of crusts more than 3 billion years ago. But whether that was identical to what we think of as plate tectonics today is not clear.
