The Soviets Learn Lessons From the Afghan War
Afghanistan was not the war that they were prepared for. They adapted to a degree, but they didn't want to adapt too much because they didn't think ultimately it was the kind of war that would define their future. And therefore, they tried to fight it on the cheap. The total casualties in 10 years of war in Afghanistan were just over 15,000 - about two months of the Ukrainian war.
