The Evolution of the Covid Virus

Virus has to find the combination of mutations which gives it its fittest state. There's always this interplay between different selective pressures. In escaping from that immunity, it sometimes costs the virus some fitness. So for example, if it escapes an antibody that binds the spike protein, the changes might impact on its ability to bind to the cell byind to the receptor. And it might not be binding to the cell or the receptor quite as strongly as it used to be.
