In the medieval era, purgatory was understood to concern huge stretches of time. It became a source of financial abuse upon the laity because you have indulgences and masses for the dead. And it's just a money making machine, which is what sparked the Reformation. Even our Eastern friends who are in other traditions will fault the Roman Catholic Church for indulgences.
