In February 2018, Liz Fong Jones posted a note on her internal Google Plus page that stayed alive for employees. She explained what she knew about Project Maven and more importantly, asked questions about what she didn't know. The note was visible to all of Google's over 100,000 employees. By late February 2018, Whitaker said she'd reached out to people in the defense world in D.C. And she found out about a DOD tech contract that was orders of magnitude bigger than Maven.
