The Paradox of Slavery and Freedom
Slavery is a complicated story, but what a lot of the revolutionary generation exactly. It's certainly the case that the southern state, southern colonies start making these arguments when once it looks like the crown and parliament are going to give rights to slaves. The big shift then, between the eighteenth century and the nineteenth century is when people start feeling that there is a paradox of slavery and freedom. And this wasn't just a kind of free floating idea; it was deeply linked to the way in which labor was organized.
