There's mass meetings that are held throughout Hancock County. People believe Joseph has to go to Carthage to answer for the riot charge. He can't just stay in Nauvoo because people believe nobody's going to convict him there. So he goes before Daniel H. Wells who was not a member of the church and releases them on habeas corpus. But this doesn't do anything to quell the discontent.
