Introduction
Few men had exerted a greater influence on Luther than Johann von Staupitz. He was his father-confessor at the monastery in Airfort, listening patiently to Luther's endless confessions. Only a few months after Luther had posted his 95 theses he suggested a friendly debate between him and other leading theologians. The Pope had made it known that he intended to smother any more theological fires before they got out of hand.
