There's an entire literature on goal setting and motivation out there in other contexts, usually work or personal improvement. But I think video games create different use cases than a lot of these other scenarios. There's this concept in psychology called psychological reactants that we hate losing choices once we feel that we have them. And so what does that do and what are the limits on how motivated we will be with all these different progress indicators? Some really interesting questions that could be better answered. Another question is why are loot drops and so motivating in games?
