The Politics of Diagnosis
In the book, you talk about what might a more democratic sort of reimagining of medical knowledge and diagnosis look like. And I suppose it's partly about removing or dismantling those kind of artificial divisions between expertise and lived experience. So many of us have absolutely no say over the diagnoses that we get, especially in the mental health system. You've got so many people who have been given diagnoses against their will without consent. It's not as simple as being like, is it good or bad? We need to look at the entrenched power dynamics that mean that we have very little say in the diagnoses thatWe receive.
