Hitchcock was a former student yale of the first american paleontologist. Hitchcock went up down the connecticut river, searching its banks and the sandstone quarries that grew up beside it. And these men were right. The tracks were made by dinosaurs. Though picturing dinosaurs as lumbering lizards, they scoffed at cock's theories about fleet and feathered bipedal birds. They did find fossilized bones, and they studied them in new haven and cambridge and amherst, but never managed to find a full skeleton.
