In my opinion we're still early on in understanding this. There's a whole field called astrobiology that studies this and they come out with some amazing things all the time. The oxygen generation is probably the most important thing even though it's a long process. But once it built up then life was rare to go. And so as soon as we get complex life, which is reflected in the fossil records,. from then on life just goes everywhereAnimal life just appears and fills all different kinds of niches all over earth. So these things kind of proceed as you would expect them to.
