Kara: Did scientists really not know about fluorescing mammals before this? Kara: Most people have either assumed that they wouldn't find this in mammals or just not thought about it at all. Back in the 80s there was another group of researchers that decided to look into this and they found that pretty much all opossums also fluoresce. But they spent a couple of years investigating it and then just sort of like the paper fell into the void and nobody ever followed up.
An accidental discovery on a nighttime walk led one scientist and his team to wonder: How many mammals glow under ultraviolet light? The list keeps growing, but scientists still aren’t sure why these furry creatures glow.
