In 168, the co-emperors were able to muster two new legions and safely think about traveling north. It was while the emperors were returning from the front that Lucius came down with a severe sickness. After a few days lingering in bed, Lucius died in early 169. Though the situation on the Danube was a pressing concern, Marcus nonetheless accompanied his brother's body back to Rome.
