The History of the Shipwreck
From colonial times until the mid 19 hundred, people on outer anks salvaged goods from shipwrecks. When a ship came ashore, it was kind of like a walmart's coming ashore, all of a sudden. People even reused the lumber from wrecks to build their homes. Today there are more rules in place than there used to be about wreck busting. But the spirit of wreck busting is still very much alive on the outer anks.
