Ernesto Miranda was accused of raping and robbing two women in 1963. He confessed to the crimes, but didn't know he had a constitutional right to remain silent or have an attorney. His lawyers tried to get his written confessions thrown out as evidence because he hadn't been made aware of his fifth and sixth amendment rights. But judges overruled them; no one had ever fought that fight in trial courts and won.
