A Brief History of the Roman Empire
The period after the Roman era is what historians called sub roman. It's a term for when things are not quite as nice or quite as good, they say. But from archaeology it does seem that there was a great deal of continuity in this initial very mysterious and you might say, dark period in the four and five hundreds. The fortresses along hadrian's wall continued to be manned and occupied.
