The Importance of Norms of Judiciary Independence

I definitely agree with Neil that the 80s marked a change in terms of the politics of judicial appointments. I think that's part of the story of judicial independence because, at least in the eye of the public, you're only independent from politics if you act like it. That goes into what I was going to say about the importance of norms of judicial independence. If it's really about bipartisan norms of how we leave the judges alone, then if those norms erode, that is a real danger to judicial independence.
