The Northern kings were not just holding the North. They expanded it. Theon Stark didn't just repel an Andal invasion at the weeping water. He went to Andelos to punish them for their invasion and brought back a bunch of heads. King John Stark built the wolf's den in order to make sure these invaders could not land again. So it's a really, really big deal that he just gave up. You would have thought, like fighting to the death, a lot of them would have preferred that. That would have been more honorable,. More Northern should die trying, right? Rather than just to bend the knee, right?
