The jaz singer was originally intended to be a silent film with a modest budget. It cost almost half a million dollars to produce at a time when they were losing out in the competition with larger studios. A number of popular songs of the time were incorporated into the film, including waiting for the robert e lee and tut tut tutsi goby.
