Psychoanalyst and patients are not friends, that means there exists no private family or similar interference. This opens up room for thoughts and feelings that would otherwise not be disclosed anywhere else. Process of emotional exchange is also called containing in psychoanalysis based on a concept from the famous analyst Wilfred Byen. The analyst helps the patient to digest unbearable feelings and states. They pick up on the patient's affects, transform them and give them back to the patient in a more bearable and understandable form.
