The Origin of the Self in the Book of Genesis
In abrahamic religions, there's a story in the book of genesis where god tells adam to cultivate the ground. And so it's an act of organization to to specify what the raw earth is meant to yieldan it's kind of unique a that god would both give man acount of that raw earth and then the permission to alter it the way that man sees fit. So pre modern man, his identity is really wrapped up in his instruction from god, his instruction from his culture, is his whole cultural or familiar reality.
