The Third Factor in Self Censorship
As shelf space gets longer and longer, there are still hits, but there are plenty of titles out on the long tail that aren't hits. Standards set in because standards of quality, community standards, if they weren't met, then the distributors would say to these forms of media, don't do that. Once you get rid of this distribution bottleneck, there's less incentive for self-censorship. And we get a coarsening of our culture, because it's the coarsening that people pay attention to.
