The Origins of Slavery in Virginia

Slavery is an institution that evolved under the laws of Virginia. Early on in the 17th century when the first people arrived enslaved in 1619 there were a lot of people who did not own their own labor. In the 1620s and 30s and 40s and 50s the majority of people who didn't Own Their Labor were English indentured servants. When Bacon's Rebellion was finally put down Virginia seemed to be done with this system of indentured servitude.
