The Importance of Secrecy in the German Army

When it became clear there was stalemate, the Germans had pulled back. They decided to sit back on their haunches and dig in. And that meant they were able to take the high ground,. places where they could observe what was going on in the valleys below. In front of the German positions, there were two bands of barbed wire. 30 meters wide, perhaps 15 meters apart. Two meters or so high, just terrifying obstacles. Behind that there was a front line trench. It was traversed, so it was zigzag, so explosive blasts couldn't just clear out huge portions of trench.
