The Middle Ages and the Roman Empire

In medieval Europe, we need to talk about the Roman Empire. If I took a map of the continental United States and laid it on top of the Roman Empire, they'd be roughly the same size. So Rome never got to certain areas that in fact experienced a very vibrant Middle Ages. Islam is a very important player almost immediately at the beginning of the Middle Ages.
