The Origins of Backwards
The word W-A-R-D also obviously, goes back to the same time period. There are a whole bunch of other words that also allow both forms. They're all out there doing their thing and some speakers prefer one and some prefer another. It's weird that English allows this or more specifically, it's weird thatEnglish in old English times allowed it because back then they had these case endings were like a complex part of the English language.
