The Romans and the Travellers in Ireland
Irish writers were overwhelmingly focused on the english speaking market in great britain. And so it was only in 18 hundred that certain new sorts of novels, like castle rack rent, began to actually talk about irish life. It's clear from mentions of the travellers that they were a well established presence in the country by the 18 forties. They functioned as horse traders, itinerant farm laborers, tin smiths and tin repairers, and as entertainers. Women often made household objects like baskets and brooms, and sometimes told fortunes.
