A rhandomized control trial, which is considered the gold standard of evaluation, found some extremely exciting results. The grandmothers were in essentially much better than an enhanced usual care. They had lower rates of common mental disorders and postromatic stress disorder. And when we dug deeper, we actually found that this work gave the grandmothers a profound sense of purpose and a sense of of belonging. It's positively changing the lives of grandmothers as well.
Dr. Dixon Chibanda, a psychiatrist in Zimbabwe, has been on a mission for years to help people gain access to mental healthcare in his community, where there's only one psychiatrist for every 1.5 million people. To bridge the gap and provide people with the help they need, Dixon turned to a rather unorthodox group for help: grandmothers.
