I think I'm on the same wavelength with the idea that I don't like having conversations that feel dead, like nothing is really happening from them. You can actually trigger the tone of the conversation by the first question that you ask. Most people like talking about themselves. So if you get them to speak about their emotional response to something that has happened, the conversation immediately starts in a different direction. And obviously, if you don't want to talk to someone, you can just do the opposite and then close the conversation down straight away.
