Tanks from the Soviet armies cracked to Minsk and other divisions raced through the streets of Moscow along roads leading to the Kremlin. Civilian traffic rolled alongside the military vehicles and pedestrian stalled past stores. Boris Yeltsin's democratically elected president of Russia was soon forced off the air by his own supporters after he climbed aboard one of the Red Army tanks. He memorably stood on the tank and made a speech that basically said we now occupy the White House.
