Sally Kohn: Even a conversation that isn't executed perfectly often is better than not addressing it at all. One of the things you suggested is that we schedule it and mention that we're going to have a performance conversation. And I suspect that there's some people that would hear that and say, "I'm going to really make them fearful about that conversation" How do you frame that? What's the benefit of scheduling and mentioning something like that in advance?Kohn: At least if I give them a heads up, they have some time to process and think through it.

Separating conversations about the content or service being offered from the deal itself can be useful to focus energy in the right places at the right time. This is especially useful for creative folks or those who might be highly sensitive to negotiations. When dealing with someone who is not behaving well, use the phrase “The problem is…” as a transition point that provides you more agency in the conversation.
