The Role of the Vagal Response in Diving

We all have a vestigial diving response which means when you dunk your face in cold water, receptors sense that cold and send messages to your brain. But as Mike explains it starts to get complicated when you get more than just your face wet. This vagal response into the heart is great at the cold of the water. The problem is if you do a whole body immersion you also initiate what we call the cold shock response which is a sympathetic response. These two arms of the autonomic nervous system go into conflict and particularly if you add a breath hold to that then the chances of those two responses going into competition and confusing the heart is significantly increased.
