Surfactant deficiency or dysfunction is going to be one of the major mechanisms. Resorption adelectasis can also be caused by intrabrancule obstruction such as inflammation, infection, mucus plugs and foreign bodies. extrinsic compression of the small airways - this is where you're basically compressing the normal lung tissue. Extra bronchial compression can be due to vascular rings, low bar emphysema or by local lymph nodes. All in all, when you have adelectasis, you run the risk of having decreased lung compliance, impairment of oxygenation, increased pulmonary vascular resistance and overall development of lung injury.
