The Benefits of Beta Blockers in Sepsis

There's evidence now from multiple RCTs that beta blockers during septic shock may not be harmful at least, and potentially beneficial. So rather than push 5 milligrams of IV metoprolol, I'd be more likely to start an esmalol drip and then titrate it up. Probably without a bolus in the situation to try to gain rate control. But overall, on average, when beta blockers are used as a first choice for atrial fibrillation during sepsis they have slightly decreased mortality.
