Plutarch's account of Antony and Cleopatra is highly romanticised. She dressed herself up as Venus, the goddess of love to meet him in Tarsus. He invites her to dinner but she insists on hosting on her very ship. 'I find no expense spread,' he says: 'She reclined beneath a canopy sparkled with gold adorned like Venus'
