After reading the Heiser paper and then Schultes' first-hand scientific accounts of his field research, Wassen was consumed by the desire to learn more. Like Lorenzo de Medici, Wassen brought on board a number of leading lights in related fields such as Albert Hoffman who synthesized LSD. Based on Schulte's advice, Wassen organized and fund ten expeditions to Oaxaca where he participated in series of sacred mushroom ceremonies among the Mazatecs. An account of one such experience entitled Seeking the Magic Mushrooms, was published in Life magazine on May 13, 1957, which soon made Wassen the world's most famous mycologist.
