How to Bring Together the Community That Doesn't See Itself as a Community

Most social entrepreneurs we spoke to have identified communities that didn't even know they were there. We've seen similar kind of community building in the work of Doryka Dan in Romania with people with rare diseases. I think there are examples in work around criminal justice or other injustices where victims begin to connect to one another and begin to find a community.

Absolutely and one has to see the TED talk of Pam where she describes the work that she does in the community to get inspired by her energy and the approach that she uses. It's indeed a beautiful example of how she brings together the community and then as you said, builds the capacity of community members so that they become experts in food and in planning and in how to work and negotiate with government so she actually is able to combine the different elements of what could be done in the community in her example. Are there other examples that you would like to bring in in terms of how to bring together the community that perhaps doesn't see itself as a community or is scattered?
Speaker 1
Well I think there are a lot of examples. Most social entrepreneurs we spoke to have identified communities that didn't even know they were there. People who didn't even know they were connected didn't even know there was something that could be changed about their circumstances. So we've seen similar kind of community building in the work of Doryka Dan in Romania with people with rare diseases where you have these almost you know one person in the whole country will suffer from one disease at a time. There isn't really a real community but kind of reframing that experience of being a rare disease patient means that there is a community within that. I think there are examples in work around criminal justice or other injustices where victims begin to connect to one another and begin to find a community and then foster that community to kind of develop strength and develop identity and a capability to express themselves.
