By 1863, 64, considerable progress was made in the demolition of the Western ramparts of the fort. The vacant ground and a part of the esplanade was plotted out for purposes of residential and office buildings. These plots were put up for sale by public auction; price ranged from 70 to 105 rupees per square yard. Government of India knitted half a crore as earnest money.
